Waterbuck Hunts in South Africa

At Bushmen Safaris, you will be hunting with experienced professional hunters that will help you identify the very best trophies, ensure your safety and maximize your bow hunting opportunities.

One of the numerous species they can help you identify and hunt is the Waterbuck. The Waterbuck is one of the animals that’s almost always included on a hunter’s to-do list when bow hunting at Bushmen Safaris. Another of the classical African antelope, the Waterbuck is a highly prized trophy and notable quarry. Despite its name, the Waterbuck is not truly aquatic nor much at home in water and swamps. It does, however, take refuge there to escape predators.

The Waterbuck is a large, robust animal that have large, rounded ears and white patches above the eyes, around the nose and mouth and on the throat. Only the males have horns, which are prominently ringed and as long as 40 inches. The horns are widely spaced and curve gracefully back and up. Territorial by nature, bulls demonstrate their dominance by swinging their necks from side to side. If this fails to deter the intruder, fierce combat can ensue, which usually results in the death of one of the participants.

The Waterbuck has a shaggy brown-gray coat and is routinely shunned by predators where game is plentiful due to its tough, stringy, and foul-smelling meat. Sweat glands located all over its body, but concentrated on the flanks provide a rather foul-smelling secretion, which waterproofs the coat but taints the flesh.

The Waterbuck is just one of the many species available to hunt on the Bushmen Safaris 22,000-acre ranch in South Africa.
