Pursuing the “White-Tailed Gnu”: Black Wildebeest Hunts in South Africa
By: Bushmen Safaris
0 Comments

The Black Wildebeest is unique to South Africa. With its ox-like build, forward-curving horns, stiff mane, and distinctive white, horse-like tail, it's known as the "White-Tailed Gnu." The name "Gnu" from Hottentot culture mimics the anima’s sharp snort when alarmed. Unlike its cousin, the Blue Wildebeest, the Black Wildebeest lives only in South Africa, making it a prized addition for serious hunters.

The Challenge for the Archery Hunter

At first glance, spotting a Black Wildebeest might seem easy. They prefer open plains where they can be seen from a distance, but don’t let that fool you. Closing the gap on a herd is an entirely different matter. With excellent senses and a powerful herd instinct, they are notoriously twitchy and unpredictable.

For the bowhunter, this pursuit demands immense patience and precision. Since both bulls and cows carry horns, distinguishing a trophy bull calls for a keen eye and the skill of an experienced guide. At Bushmen Safaris, our guides are skilled at identifying subtle differences in horn bases (the bosses) and behavior, ensuring you target the right animal.

The Bushmen Safaris Experience

The Black Wildebeest is one of many world-class species available on our 22,000-acre ranch. The property is managed specifically for archery-only hunting, so animals are not disturbed by rifle fire, allowing for natural movement and excellent chances for a close-range shot from our strategically placed hides. Whether seeking a challenging stalk or a patient day in the blind, hunting Black Wildebeest here offers an experience unique to Limpopo Province.
